Making Sense of Bordeaux 2023

The 2023 Bordeaux vintage delivered many exceptional wines, surprising the industry with its quality despite facing mildew pressure.

It is a year where the terroir and producer styles are prevalent, with only one significant heatwave during the summer. High-quality wines from this vintage exhibit remarkable elegance and are purely defined by the region.

The wines are less exuberant and rich compared to their predecessor, featuring lower pHs, bright acidity, and moderate alcohol levels. They strike a balance, offering more generosity and approachability than the 2021 vintage.

Yet, the vintage's heterogeneity calls for careful selection. Wine enthusiasts are encouraged to pay attention to progressive and precise winemakers who make the right winemaking decisions without pushing extraction.

Looking into Right Bank

& Left Bank

From our tastings in Bordeaux, the Right Bank showcased more consistent quality, particularly with wines from La Conseillante, Cheval Blanc, Canon, Figeac, Vieux Château Certan, and Le Pin.

Pomerol stands out this year, with high-quality wines devoid of unripe tannins and austerity. These wines offer a broad drinking window, challenging the stereotype that Bordeaux wines require decades of aging.

Moving to the Left Bank, Saint-Julien wines, especially Léoville Barton and Léoville Las Cases, impressed. However, wine selection from this region demands greater scrutiny.

The most exceptional renditions from the Left Bank, according to our taste, include Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Montrose, Lafite Rothschild, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, and Château Margaux.

The Situation of the Market

The wine market remains cautious in the current economic climate and after the somewhat elevated prices at the Bordeaux En Primeur 2022 campaign.

On the one hand, Bordeaux already released its “vintage of the century”, on the other hand, there is geopolitical and economic uncertainty and a larger crop. In the best-case scenario, the 2023 vintage prices will consider consumer sentiment and will present exceptional buying opportunities as châteaux will not try to capture profits without merit offering exceptional wines at great prices which are expected to be lower than last year.

The Hard Work Pays Off in the Vineyard

Warm and wet weather throughout June and into July brought the threat of downy mildew, a fungus that lives within the vine tissue and can cause the widespread reduction in yields. By July 2023 is was estimated that 90% of Bordeaux’s vineyards had been affected in some way, shape or form.

To survive downy mildew, you had to be either very quick to adapt, or very lucky. Those quick to adapt were the Châteaux that had both the technology and available labour to cope with well-timed interventions. Fabien Teigen at Château Smith-Haut Lafite praised “the tireless work of our teams, present 7 days a week” for minimising the potential loss to fungal infection.

Some areas simply experienced less pronounced mildew-inducing conditions. Pierre Grafeuille of Château Montrose in Saint Éstephe noted “lower than average rain it this section of the Médoc”, a sentiment echoed by those on the left bank closest to the Gironde.
